Fifty years ago Walter Raushenbusch published his first major book, ianity and the Social Crisis, and the Christian world was introduced- in Reinhold Niebuhr's words- to ""the real founder of social Christianity in this country--its most brilliant and satisfying exponent"". To recognize this 50th anniversary of the publication of Raushenbusch's first major work, which was the herald of many others, and to make the essential parts of these books more readily available for this generation, Dr. Landis has edited a surprisingly representative selection of these writings. They have lost little of their original vitality and freshness, and they are amazingly current in their application to present problems despite the passing of the years. Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick has provided a personal interpretation of the life and work of Walter Raushenbusch in a most incisive and satisfying way. It is good to have this book of and about Raushenbusch at a time when the hope for any part of God's kingdom on earth seems more than a little faint. It will warm the hearts of an older generation which once shared his passion, and perhaps kindle a new fire in those who have not yet cared enough about the world in which we live our world, which is God's world too.
