PRINCE OF VIENNA by Bernard Grun

An admiring glance at the life- and works- of Oscar Straus, neither kith to Johann nor kin to Richard, but who as a musician in a lighter medium was tremendously successful. A prolific and popular composer, Straus' work reflected the world of Paris, Vienna and Berlin- until the advent of Hitler, his companionable marriage to Clara, and his celebrity as the many operation, primarily A Waltz Dream and The Chocolate Soldier were played and loved around the world. A time in Hollywood was disappointing; the years in America- after Hitler- less productive; but he returned to Europe and the last years, still active in his 80's, again brought considerable reward with La Ronde..... Tribute to a man, and a form of entertainment which has died with him, this is a competent chronology but assumes perhaps a wider interest than may now exist.
