Gentle, friendly memories, sayings, stories in dialect, of slave-born Woodson, who died in 1920. In more or less chronological order, tales of Virginia plantation life and slavery, of the Civil War, the capture of Booth, the coming of the new order, and its meaning to the family, moves to Baltimore and back. Ghosts and scares, legends and customs of the family, meetings and baptizings, hunting, children growing up -- these combine to form a pleasant picture of two races holding each other in true affection, a portrait of a Negro of the Old South.
