KIRKUS REVIEW

A large family picnic is attended, unexpectedly, by Maurice- whom everyone hates with due cause, and the many motives for this antagonism are aired- retrospectively and anticipate his murder which is to follow. The bitterness of his brothers and sisters-in-law is exceeded only by that of his son which- when directed at the mother who condoned him through cowardice- prompts a confession.... The dowdy circumstances of these lifes, crimped and crippled by one man, are accurately reproduced.
