A lively collection of 50 contemporary poems culled from the works of poets who have won the prestigious National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Award for Poetry for Children: Arnold Adoff, John Ciardi, Barbara Esbensen, Aileen Fisher, Karla Kuskin, Myra Cohn Livingston, David McCord, Eve Merriam, Lilian Moore, and Valerie Worth. The selections are truly kid-pleasing: Children voted for their favorite five poems by each author in classrooms across the country, and the winners are included here, along with a page of biographical notes, quotations from the poets, and a useful bibliography. The treasures within are diminished by the book's production. While the cover is inviting, MacLeod's black-and-white spot illustrations are uninspired, and Nadel's watercolor portraits of the poets are somewhat amateurish. There are editorial mishaps as well: Esbensen's first name is misspelled in the table of contents, and Adoff's birth date is off by 20 years.
