THE SANTA ON THE MANTEL

A scrap of sentiment in a diminutive story (presumably North Carolina again) of Birdie, a youngster of about six in her pieced-up dress, and Lala, with nothing at all to give her for Christmas-except the piece of blue silk she had been saving for many years; and the plaster-of-Paris Santa Claus on the mantel which will keep the real one away..... None of this is more than stocking-sized but along with the linecut illustrations, it will be, as they say down here, ""fitten"" for a seasonal reminder.
