Horse colors, markings, anatomical parts, breeds, gaits, sports and games, then working horses, war horses and famous horses. All are listed, illustrated and briefly explained, with a minimum of style or amplification (""Did you know that zebras are members of the horse family? . . . Running horses are thoroughbreds and are ridden by lightweight jockeys wearing colorful silks . . . Alexander the Great's father was a famous king""--what of, Devereux doesn't say.) His closing advice on learning to ride is just as perfunctory--""The number of riding schools in your area will depend on where you live""--and, when he casually recommends joining a pony club, which entails owning and keeping your own mount (""It's a lot of work,"" but much more fun than ""having to take whatever horse is available at a public stable""), downright callous. Essentially a padded glossary, spun off from Backyard Pony, above.
