The story of Greek-American spongers in the Florida gulf and of young Soc Tillis who, with luck and almost everyone against him strove to clear his father's name of the slender spread at his death by an old childhood friend who was jealous of his success in America. See is a very real character. He has a ready fist which he puts to many uses (and which does him out of various jobs). But he has real courage and that, combined with the native diving ability, brings things right. A sound, exciting story with a fresh background, peopled by a group of Americans of whom little is known.
