Salve for the single in the story of Susan, who passes up marriage to Slim to care for a father, a brother and three nieces, only to find herself alone, when one at a time, the family breaks up. She becomes a paid companion, first to an old lady whose great nephew plays her for a sucker, then to a screen star who uses her as a foil. She grows dowy and middle-aged before her time, until the war brings rehabilitation for with Slim again in the picture -- and marriage. Sugar-coated.
