A BEAR NAMED GRUMMS

Sweden and the career of a remarkable bear who brought happiness and good fortune to the Krogs make an engaging first book by this author. At their poor country home young Marit and Lars Krog one day discover Grumms who has wandered into their back yard. They care for him, Papa Krog teaches him to dance, and in a future that proves Grumms the new craze of the countryside and brings a fit of treacherous jealousy from a rival dancing bear owner, the Krogs wind up with a command performance for the king in Stockholm. Curious as to what they should give Grumms in return, the Krogs free him in the forest- but are delighted when Grumms prefers them to the wilds. Sari's grey wash drawings are full and humorous.
