Harriet, the same young elephant who last year took us in, out and through our paces in Where Is My Friend?, introduces ordinal numbers here when she hurries to the circus tent in order to be first in line. Her friend mouse is second to arrive, duck third, and so on up to owl, who is tenth. (""What a long line it was!"") When the door near owl is opened, making him first and Harriet tenth and last, ""she was so disappointed that she almost cried""--but lo! with all the chairs in a circle, everyone has a front seat and no one is first or last. Maestro's deep construction-paper colors are designed to keep pre-schoolers awake for the social and mathematical lesson, but neither story nor pictures will have them lining up for a second reading.
