A ""Stepping Stone Book"" with chapters and enough pleasant, realistic b&w drawings to make the text approachable. Billy and his classmates, feeling grown up with their recently acquired knowledge that the Santas they see are really ordinary people (including last summer's ice-cream man), are putting on a play about their forebears' various midwinter celebrations; in the course of working through his stage fright, bickering with his best friend, and being mistaken by his own little sister for the real Santa, Billy comes to agree with his wise Grandpa: Santa represents the Christmas spirit. Sachs is a bit too earnest in detailing an evenhanded range of customs, but she tells a realistic, enjoyable story about nice, ordinary, imperfect third-graders.
