Melodramatic angles spoil the story, told by Austrian born and educated Poldi, of murder and intimidation in Hollywood. With her husband Gil, whose first novel has just been sold to pictures, Poldi takes Hollywood in her stride but is questioned in a suicide of a woman she met on the train west. Poldi fights against a whispering campaign, works out a theory of murder, and her discoveries help a weakling provide the justice needed for a couple steeped in evil. Good slant on the telling, with Hollywood life plausible instead of exaggerated, and with fresh interest in spite of drawbacks.
