WASHINGTON IS FOR YOU

We'd like to be able to recommend this for the easy reading level, as distinguished from the next step up in Frances Carpenter's Holiday in Washington, or even Bernard Rosenfeld's trio of Let's Go books (To the Capitol, To the Supreme Court, To the White House). But actually they overlap in age appeal; this new title is handled in a way that the average 8 to 11 would consider beneath him, hence we are placing it here- with reservations. It purports to be a brief travelogue of the nation's capitol at Easter time, seen through the eyes of two young children who visit the Capitol, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and Mount Vernon. The highpoint of their visit is the traditional egg rolling on the White House lawn and seeing the President, who drives home the idea that the White House belongs to the American people. Not as satisfactory as we hoped.
