Kathy McCall, in her mid-teens, suddenly finds life with her intellectual and artistic Boston family unbearable. Particularly painful to Kathy is her brother John's sudden coldness and contempt for everything his younger sister does. Used to his easy companionship, John's sudden rejection of Kathy simply magnifies her lack of belief in herself. But the pains which rack Kathy's adolescence are inevitable ones and resolve with time and growth, a fault Kathy learns at the conclusion of this warm, convincing, and absorbing book. Betty Cavanna writes of adolescence with a familiarity, sympathy, and humor far above that of many of her colleagues.
