EAST ON SULLIVAN STREET: Michael's Part in a Gay New York Italian Festival

By

Publisher: Knopf

On the last day of the festival, Michael cannot stand his boredom any longer. After wandering down the street, he gets a job counting change at a friend's stand. The high point (a mole hill) of the half-alive story is reached when Michael's parents walk in on the scene, frantic because of the lad's disappearance. The fuzzy snapshot of a festival is not sharp nor exciting enough to command a young reader's attention, and the illustrations do not capture the exuberant atmosphere, serving only as so many unnecessary decorations--all in all, a fairly flat fling. By the successful author of Mr. Turtle's Mystery (1961, p. 7, J-7).
