KIRKUS REVIEW

The ""notes"" assembled here consist of English's introductions to the different groups of instruments and--arranged within each group--first-person comments by individual musicians. The musicians trace their routes to their present positions in different orchestras--a large proportion of player-instrument pairings came about by sheer chance--and comment on their instruments' workings or history, and/or particular demands and satisfactions. The emphasis is on the musicians--and while there are more thoroughgoing introductions to the instruments of the orchestra, this personal approach might interest would-be musicians.
