A DAY OF WINTER by Betty Miles

A DAY OF WINTER

By

Pub Date: July 18th, 1961
Publisher: Knopf

Author and illustrator combine to invoke the feelings of a cold winter's day and the relief of a warm house at the close of it, as a little boy goes out and returns at sunset to experience the thaw of icy clothing, face, and feet. The word images here are sharp and capture the essence of sensory reaction, heightened by their presentation in white against a blue background. But Remy Charlip's blunt, stark illustrations in 3 colors despite their attempt to convey feeling, are much too austere to accomplish anything but a negative reaction in the younger reader.
