Almost all children have something in their immediate environments that they have been warned against. This makes this cautionary tale from Australia one of universal experience -- or at least near-experience. Jamie had been forbidden to cross the railroad trestle bridge alone. It was very lonely on his side. His recently widowed mother had very little time for him. His uncle, who ran the farm, did not seem to notice he was there. His older cousin, Malcolm, was a tease. And, Jamie was used to a city life with lots of other children around. His temptation to cross is easy to understand -- the children on the other side were having a grand, impromptu party. Jamie escaped almost certain death when he crossed back. He was heroically rescued by Malcolm and he learned more about himself and the people around him in the drama of it all. Not much, but not bad for the younger readers in this age group.
