Annie Brown is just such another as Francie Nolan of A Tree Grows in rooklyn -- and once again there is triumph over the strictures of extreme poverty as hardships become adventures to be met and conquered. There is no glossing over of the details, which might have been sordid or might have been disastrous to what best was an inauspicious marriage. Carl was a law student: Annie, a teen-ager, tterly unprepared to cope with marriage. But she had an inner strength, a rare gift of winning friends, an imaginative approach to challenges, made incredibly difficult by the bitter, unrelenting parents on both sides of the match. The book is definitely Annie's and she will find the way to the heart of the most hardened reader. As the August selection of the Literary Guild, the book is off to a good start.
