THE LISTENING ONE

The ""daughter of valor"" selected as the heroine of this new addition to the series is a relatively unknown Indian princess called Lomea. She lived in California during the stormy days of struggle between the Mexican government and Spain. Before the new government came into being, the Indians lived in a San Franciscan mission where Lomea learned to cook, new, spin and read. Afterwards, Lomea marries Pablo and settles on a small piece of land. Her people, caught between the power of greedy dons and the determination of the Mexicans, suffer when land is unequally divided. Though Lomea and Pablo are awarded title to the land on which the mission stood, Don Caterino fights for the water rights to the property. In the end Pablo and Lomea are victorious and the Indian are given land to cultivate and a place to live. A book which will not capture the fancy of all but may interest those living in the region.
