A summer begun prematurely when Nancy drops out of high school ""to live her own life"" and maybe even marry ""town no-good"" Wayne, ends as it usually does--with Nancy headed for home and Wayne wanted only by the police. Nancy runs away to an understanding aunt in Milwaukee where she spends the summer working with black, worldly-wise Earline in Head Start. Encounters with Wayne (prejudiced) and her long-absent father (unconcerned, uncommitted) end in disenchantment, and school and mother seem more tolerable. Melodramatic storms give way to heavy calms--it's passable as fiction, period.
