INVITE A BIRD TO DINNER: Simple Feeders You Can Make

How to convert household objects--old margarine tubs, onion bags, etc.--into simple bird feeders: a light and airy approach suitable for many ages. Younger kids can smear a cornmeal/peanut butter blend on pine cones or hang leftovers on old Christmas trees. Older ones may need an egg-beater drill or access to a stove to come up with their more ambitious constructions. Everything from stale bread to thistle seed can attract birds, but kids won't know which kind have arrived from the illustrations--a weakness, but one that can lead to further investigations. But a list of whom to expect is provided each time, and the side tips--why suet must stay cold or coconut must be fresh--are a bonus.
