MY FATHER, THE COACH: And Other Stories

Not to be confused with Alfred Slote's novel of the same name, these are ten heavy-footed stories, or, more like it, variations on the same story, about a high school athlete who overcomes some difficulty--clumsiness, overaggressiveness, fear of injuring others, femaleness, inter. est in studies or lack of it, etc. It's all a question of mental attitude, meaning that nothing--neither guilt over having nearly blinded another player, nor friendship, nor the school literary magazine--is as important as playing ball. But even the most dedicated might not want to take time between wind sprints to hear the same pep talk ten times.
