Libby's livelier than usual sports biography follows Jackson through all the turmoil of Charley Finley's A's and the bickering among the Yankees as well as through all the runs and records and World Series victories of his ""incredible career."" There are lots of quotes--generally less banal than those in Jackson's own . . . Scrapbook (1978)--from the controversial player who felt ""lonely and unloved"" and ""treated like a nigger"" during his first days with the Yankees; and who now observes that ""My life is not what I thought it would be. The game is not what I thought it would be. I've made more money and had less happiness than I would have thought possible."" But in the game, as he demonstrates, ""I really respond to pressure. I love it!
