CHAMPIONS OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Pub Date: Sept. 1st, 1975
Publisher: Hawthorn

A 75-year survey of the ""great teams of all time"" from the days of Ivy League dominance in the early 1900's through last year's postseason bowl games. Author Libby focuses on the perennial football contenders--Notre Dame, Oklahoma, USC, Alabama, Ohio State, Texas, Nebraska, Penn State and Michigan--while keeping an eye on some of the significant rule changes over the years. As might be expected, a number of powerhouse teams are reflected through their coaches and star players. The most heralded of field strategists include Amos Alonzo Stagg (innovator of the huddle and lateral), Glenn ""Pop"" Warner (pioneered the spiral pass), Knute Rockne (.897 winning percentage at Notre Dame between 1918-30), Frank Leahy, Bud Wilkinson, Paul Bear Bryant, Darrell Royal, Woody Hayes, John McKay, etc. Though the terrain is extensive, Libby is sure-footed.
