COCK-A-DOODLE DUDLEY

Though little Dudley crows loud and long each day, he has no illusions: it's the other animals who admire him because they think he causes the sun to rise. Only the ""brute of a goose,"" Gunther, wants to prove otherwise. The other animals are unmoved by Gunther's attempted exposÉ, but Dudley insists on agreeing that he's just ordinary and--to escape Gunther's malice--hides out in the forest. But the next day this nice fowl gets an unexpected triumph: the sun, who is fond of him, decides not to get up until Dudley finally crows--hours late. This pleasingly cheerful fable is told in a lively style that recommends it for sharing aloud. Peet's dashing, expressive line characterizes each beast with vigor and finesse. An entertaining tale with an eventful, unhackneyed plot.
