Mr. Pronzini has extended himself from the short order of violence (a series of mysteries) to an ongoing bloodspattered continuity in not so Hidden Valley high up in the mountains where three hardcore hoods retreat in an armored car having blown the job which would have made them solvent. Another recluse there is Cain, drinking himself into anonymity after the death of his wife and children. But more prominent is leading citizen Matt Hughes whose last adulterous rendezvous in a cabin promotes his death. . . and the heist of the church. . . and the shooting of a young man about to become a father. . . before Cain organizes the necessary reprisals. Chain-smoking guns and death and disorder -- televiewable, possibly, for the man in the house who might better be doing the dishes.
