When Cam’s boyfriend, Jonesy, and friends Amber and Buffy return home, they’re hopeful that their first media interview since the events of the previous year will allow them to set the record straight. They survived their encounter with the Carrington Ghoul, and now, after graduation, only Cam is still left in Sanera, California; he’s working at their old high school as an assistant coach. Everyone is returning for the Sanera Hallowed Fall Fest, Mayor Gomez’ newly established three-day event honoring the Carrington Ghoul’s victims, but their plans go awry when a new mystery arises, one that feels chillingly familiar. The pacing ramps up and tensions rise as the mystery-solving gang reunites. Every time they think they have the case figured out, new information is thoughtfully and creatively revealed. There’s continuity in the portrayals of the lead characters, who largely present white and have matured since readers first met them. The narrative switches among their perspectives, and information from the first book is folded in as the plot progresses, helping to orient readers even as more clues are revealed. This work delivers on its engaging premise with a plot that offers gripping twists and turns.
