KIRKUS REVIEW

Atlantis is San Soleo by the sea--pop. 687; the era is theearly 30's; and the time is that which Sally Benson stoppeddead and made so alive, summers of a girl fourteen andfifteen. ""Everyone's instincts those days were less confused""; smoking was just as bad even if it wasn't pot; sex was ""icky""rather than kicky; and the ukelele had not been supplanted bythe guitar. Not confused then, but fastidious, too nice andviolently virtuous was Virginia who records here that firstsummer when a boy called Kenney Peach was just peachy keen; and a second When she fell still more in love with DwayneSkinner, who ""worked fora living...died in a war...paid hisway"" out of the depression with a paper route and left herbehind--for an older woman...Maybe not too much but what thereis of it is pert and undisguisedly direct.
