A stroll with a Miniature Dachshund involves a Florida pet-sitter in a vicious murder.

Retired from the Sarasota Sheriff’s Department, Dixie Hemingway is just beginning to get a new lease on life after the death of her husband and child (Curiosity Killed the Cat Sitter, 2006). As she’s walking the aged Mame, the Dachshund heads straight for the woods, where she digs up the dead body of Conrad Ferrelli, whose Doberman Reggie is one of Dixie’s clients. The discovery is a double surprise, because Dixie had just waved to a driver she thought was Conrad. Wealthy Conrad’s enemies include his nasty brother Denton, a subject of interest to the police, who wants to spend the family trust money on nefarious schemes. Dixie realizes she’s a target when she’s nearly run down while exercising a greyhound in a parking lot. Sexy Lieutenant Guidry assigns an officer to follow her, and her fireman brother Michael and his partner, undercover cop Paco, keep an eye on her at home. Not content with so much protection, Dixie uses herself as a lure after Conrad’s wife is killed with a poison dart in order to get proof that Denton is responsible. In a cliffhanger ending, she narrowly escapes death while trying to rescue Reggie.

The second in what is destined to be a very popular series adds a hint of future romance.
