A call to care for an iguana involves pet-sitter Dixie Hemingway in yet another murder case.
Still recovering from having to kill a man (Duplicity Dogged the Dachshund, 2007, etc.), Dixie is slowly reviving her emotional life, put on hold by the shocking death of her husband and daughter. She’s a little in love with two men, a dashing detective and a handsome lawyer. Sick of homicides, Dixie neglects to report the murder of a private security guard, then learns that he was guarding the house of her new client. With police permission, she visits and finds a nervous, attractive nurse attending sick Ken Kurtz, apparently at death’s door. Kurtz entrusts Dixie to care for his iguana, who was locked in a chilly wine cellar and needs reviving. Dixie continues nosing around and gets knocked on the head for her efforts. The nurse flees, but she’s replaced by sightings of a mysterious woman from Kurtz’s past, a former researcher for the Army now working for the FBI. Dixie’s sleuthing reveals a complicated tale of stolen secrets. Once more she puts her life on the line to save a pet and solve a crime.
An enjoyable tale full of pet-care tips.
