A melodrama dated from its title onwards. Both economic realities and the vulgar, outspoken Sam Green are Clay Stembridge's undoing river a long scandal-ridden Labor Day weekend at his Citizen Kane type mansion in the California Sierras, during which the Nazi-sympathizing newspaper mogul alternately cajoles and threatens his guests in an attempt to buy four Hollywood studios and further corner the communications market. Copious references to well-known persons and scandals of the movie community, plus fictionalized renditions of others (by a writer who knows that community well) titillate the reader and lend a certain feeling of authenticity to the story which we have all read many times before.
