Third volume of a trilogy (the predecessors were Out of These Roots, published by Caxton in 1944- and Paradise Walk, Dutton, 1946), this continues with the same characters, Nick Gordon, young newspaperman and poet, with his wife, Jerry. With Jerry's death in childbirth, Nick, broken hearted and alone, finds some degree of comfort in his affair with Ellen, a fellow reporter. Torn between his awareness of being unfair to Ellen in thinking himself unfaithful to his dead wife, he asks her to marry him. Running contrapuntal to his romance, there is the story of the Tab, the newspaper Nick works on, and the process of disintegration during the absence of the idealistic O'Neill, during the war. Finally, after the paper gets wholly into McLane's control, Nick and others are fired. Contemporary New York setting for this dual theme story,- the romance and Nick's inner conflict set against the background of the newspaper battle for survival. Sharper writing than Paradise Walk. Limited appeal.
