The third in the trilogy of Inheritance, ""Heirs and Assigns"", of which The King Was In His Counting House and Hamlet Had An Uncle were the first two. Once again this is a satiric, sophisticated, picaresque, and slightly ribald retelling of fact. This is the story of Nemattanon, the earthly son of Quetzal, god of the Ajacan tribe, and his education by the Spaniards. Namattanon is adopted by a conquistador, Menendez, who is motivated largely by love of conquest -- of gold -- of religion. How Nemattanon goes to Mexico, is baptised, learns the refinements and adulteries of court life, takes part in the Spanish attack against the French colony in Florida, and eventually returns to Ajacan determined that Menendez shall never civilize, christianize, or conquer his people. For Cabelleros.
