KIRKUS REVIEW

16 short stories and the complete version of M'liss represent the best of Bret Harte. The foreword by Walter Van Tilburg Clark restores some of the gold to a literary reputation that started losing luster in Harte's own lifetime. In addition to The Luck of Roaring Camp and Tennessee's Partner, this includes less well known but equally strong stories such as A Yellow Dog, Salomy Jane's Kiss and Wan Lee, the Pagan. Harte is one of our writers who should happen to all of our readers in their early teens -- especially these stories.
