Fifty-two elite specimens of Homo uniformis (""Man Alike Throughout"") are touring the classified planet of Lysenka II when an accident strands a busload of them among a lively selection of unsavory-looking predators, descendants of the obsolete species Homo sapiens. A small party sets off for help; all shortly have reason to question the limits of ""Biological Communism"" and the utopian World-State to which they are supposedly all dedicated. While each is self-righteously accusing the others of disloyalty to ""the System,"" they are captured by a troop of savages and prepared for what looks remarkably like sacrifice. Despite the setting, those expecting an adventure story will find these doings rather arid; Aldiss sticks to the bare outline of an ironically schematized fable. On those terms, elegant.
