IVORY, APES AND JIMIBEL

Jimibel, the son of a big game hunter, leaves his home in America just before he is about to enter high school and joins his father in the ""big bush"" of West Africa. His experiences during a four year stay there are as varied as they are exciting. Pythons, elephants, monkeys become as familiar to him as cats and dogs are to Americans. He visits a leper colony, observes the struggle between white and native medicine, makes close friendship with the natives, and even acquires a mother. Written by the author of Scrimshaw and Sudden Death, there is an authenticity about Jimibel's account. No less adventurous than African stories of the Tarzan genre, it derives suspense from the vivid descriptions of jungle life and from the author's articulate appreciation of what an experience of this sort could mean to an alert and active young boy. A book recommended both for the information it imparts and the entertainment it provides.
