From a noted British illustrator who has long been a popular favorite, one of the most beautiful books he has done in quite a while. The unexceptional text here focuses on a little donkey--who is left behind when his mother carries the Holy Family to Bethlehem--and the neighbor girl, Rebecca, who sets out with him to find them. But the rich, dark colors, the delightful Wildsmith details (including a little tiger cat who tags along on the journey), and the unusual effects he produces with the addition of bright gold--in the stars, the angel, and even the city of Jerusalem--will appeal to a broad audience. It does seem odd, in illustrations that clearly derive inspiration from the appearance of the real Holy Land, to show both Rebecca and Mary (inconsistently) as blonde; but perhaps that license should be as forgivable as the swirling, starry snow. Regardless, this is sure to be a favorite gift book for the coming holidays.
