KIRKUS REVIEW

With a warm foreword by Casey Stengel, this is a biography definitely for the baseball fans for Mantle claims he was born to the game. With his birth, and even his name, his father planned for his son's becoming a player, later he trained him and lived to see him make the grade. The early discovery of osteomyelitis, the development of terrific abilities, eventual recognition and, after playing with other clubs, the deal with the Yankees where he was rookie of the year -- these are succeeded by the accident to his knee and his Dad's joining him in the hospital with cancer of the stomach. Back to the Yankees and greater fame with high spot games and the pennant win and the question whether Mantle can hold up physically to continue his stardom -- this rounds out a straightforward career story of an unaffected baseball great.
