Dad's Fulbright takes thirteen-year-old Susanna Miller and family to Turku, Finland for a year where they discover sauna, Sibelius and sisu (""a never-give-up quality""). in this familiar case history of learning other customs and seeing new ways of looking at things--with the usual prejudices and stereotypes to overcome--the vocabulary vacillates between an ingratiating teenagese and authorial commentary. The stock figures are imprecisely ""funny"" or ""crazy"" so the interaction is superficial and uninvolving. A remarkably unproblematic adolescent, Susanna behaves in predictable modes with only one protest the entire time (a desire, coming from nothing, to wear lipstick). Neither vapid nor vital.
