The comfortable, expansive story of vigorous, generous, widowed Mrs. Kraemer and her six children, this reflects middle class America through the 1900's, and one woman's struggle to achieve something better for the next generation. With little means and many demands, here is the chronic obstacle of making ends meet; the worry of unrented rooms in a small piece of city property, the reluctance to send her children out to earn too young. Here were the crises she met, from her own resistance to surgery in a gall-stone attack, to her eldest son's marriage to an Italian girl; to the loss of Mary, quiet and dependable, as she marries a chiropractor; to Margaret's unhappy love affair as she goes with a boy outside her social class; to Pauline's discontent at home and her departure; and finally to her youngest, Trudie's, desire to become an artist, the opportunity she gets for further study in New York. An unpretentious portrait of unpretentious people, this is genuine.
