KIRKUS REVIEW

An earnest but enthusiastic guide to being a sibling, from a girl’s perspective. This workbook-style guide defines birth siblings, half-siblings, and step-siblings, and then goes on to chronicle all the ways siblings can support or annoy each other. There are outlines, quizzes, and points to ponder, quotes from children about being the oldest, or middle child, or baby; the whole is full of asides, multiple font types, lively illustrations by Cornell, and tear-outs (limiting the book’s use in libraries). There are succinct case studies from children who have been embarrassed by a sibling, ways to keep the peace in a shared room (divide the space, discuss things calmly) or to share a beloved item of clothing (take turns, swap). Those who might ignore parental advice will find Whitney’s unbiased point-of-view and unswerving cheerfulness helpful. (Nonfiction. 7-12)
