KIRKUS REVIEW
Two new versions of the gladsome story of the animal quartet are at hand, each with some positive aspects, neither a challenge to Hans Fischer's The Traveling Musicians. Here the story is condensed, told in a few simple sentences on the page facing each picture--told clearly, but with no lift or lilt. The pictures, all in the same muted tonalities, with a preponderance of soft gray and mossy green, are stylized, sweet, spiritless, characterless. The total effect is tepid. No harm is done to the story except, sadly, to make it not very interesting.
