Sixteen sermons by the minister of First Congregational Church of Berkeley, California, and former professor of homiletics at Yale Divinity School, are arranged to suggest the Biblical drama of redemption: ""Man: His Nature and Dilemma""; ""God: His Answer to Man's Dilemma""; ""The Church: Its Promise and Power""; and ""The Christian Man: His Life and Labor"". The sermons are situational--being addressed not only to a particular congregation, but to a congregation many of whom met weekly in advance to study and reflect upon the Biblical passages on which the sermons are based. They reflect the University environment in which they were preached, without being overladen with erudition. The scope of daily living covered is wider than the theological plan given to the series. The style is direct and lively. At points, the sense of depth is not always felt.
