The story of the Union side of the Civil War is now being published in a special edition for young readers. The same vigorous narrative that distinguished the original is retained and abridgements have been made by the author in the interest of pace and general scope. The large size illustrations are based on lithographs of the period, sketches made by artist-correspondents on the field of battle, original paintings of model figures in battles and some paintings created for this book alone. Despite these diversified visual interests, they are stagnant, and stilted with very little to distinguish one from the next. Readers capable of assimilating material here would be wise to turn to the original prize winning history.
