KIRKUS REVIEW

Two lengthy (over 1000 pages all told) volumes presenting the cream of 55 years' worth of writing from Chess Life and its predecessor, Chess Review, the aristocrats of chess magazines. Analyses of famous games predominate the scores of entries, but also included are short stories, plays, poems, letters, reflections. The authors form a roll call of great players--Alkehine, Reshevsky, Fine, Spassky, Fischer--and commentators; while most of their work will confound nonplayers, those versed in the game of kings should embrace this rich collection.
