Profile of a British Columbian river which has never long tolerated man on its rocks and rapids, and only recently permitted penetration through the gaunt Coast Mts. The gold rush brought it belatedly to public attention when gold was found in the fabulous cariboo country. Since then it has been unending struggle to build means of communication and transportation into the Fraser's back country. While there is scarcity of folkways, there is compensation in the strange and eerie setting, which the author has fully evoked. This new addition to the Rivers series holds to its high standard.
