The drama, suspense and detail of fiction combine with the panache of Stonewall Jackson to make exciting reading in this account of the repulsion of Union penetration into Virginia. That Jackson's death was a tragedy for the South is unquestioned; that the Confederacy fell as a result is dubious. Also dubious is the need for isolating these events, described in various biographies of Jackson and books on Civil War engagements in general. However, if the interest (and assignments) are holding up, there's the attraction of extra insight into tactics and strategy.
