DECATHLON CHALLENGE: Bruce Jenner's Story

Jenner's account of his rise to stardom as a decathlete, with blow-by-blow descriptions of each tenth of each decathlon that led up to his Olympic victory in Montreal. All the compulsion that went into building a superstar from an ""ordinary"" athlete is here: the muscle-coddling, the geographical juggling to be near the best training facilities, the dogged bouts with discus and javelin--all part of the unremitting quest for a gold coin that drove his muscles into compliance, and his wife to an analyst. But this, with quotes from Jenner alternating with descriptive passages by his co-author, is rather more tedious than titillating. . . another uninspired exercise in pure determination. The most interesting question posed by this ultimately sad chronicle of one moment of glory: what next, now that the best is over?
